Eating Disorders Continued

There are three common types of eating disorders:

Anorexia Nervosa is a self-imposed starvation by restrictive eating, excessive exercising, or purging. People with anorexia believe they are overweight even though they are indeed very thin. Although they are obsessed with food, they continually deny their hunger. They restrict other parts of their lives besides food, such as their relationships and other pleasurable activities. If left untreated, anorexia nervosa can lead to serious and life-threatening problems such as heart damage, kidney damage, osteoporosis, injury to all parts of the digestive system, and infertility in women.

Bulimia Nervosa is a vicious cycle of binging and purging food on a regular basis. Individuals often consume large amounts of food in a very short period of time, and immediately purge by vomiting or abusing laxatives or other medications. People with bulimia might be slightly overweight or average in weight, but their obsession to become thin drives them to purge and commit to unhealthy dieting. If left untreated, bulimia nervosa can lead to serious and life-threatening problems such as heart damage, kidney damage, injury to all parts of the digestive system, and severe dental damage.

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a recurrent, out-of-control episode of consuming abnormally large amounts of food whether you are hungry or not. It is common to experience feelings of disgust and guilt both during and after the bingeing process. This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety and helplessness along with severe health concerns and may possibly create social phobias due to the fear of how others may see you.
