Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can lead to emotional and physical problems and potential death if not treated properly. Eating disorders are characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior. Eating disorders can affect both women and men no matter what age with the three most common types of eating disorders being Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. Revolving your day around food, weight and your appearance becomes a practice in which your health, relationships and overall functioning are gravely affected. Eating disorders often develop as a way of coping with emotional pain such as low self-esteem, depression, feelings of helplessness or worthlessness, family issues or stress and trauma. Your newly-found eating pattern becomes the outlet you turn to in order to handle these stresses of life, until you loss control over your eating habits and chaos erupts.

Ridden with guilt and remorse you may feel ashamed of your eating habits and try to hide your problems with food from family members and friends. You may even convince yourself that you can handle this on your own just so you don’t have to discuss and openly admit your struggle with food. However, openly discussing this issue and becoming aware of the debilitating nature of this disorder is a necessary step in your recovery process. Through expressing underlying issues relating to your unhealthy eating patterns you will gain a greater awareness of your emotional distress and begin to explore effective ways to conquer it. As part of your treatment, you will work with a nutritionist to monitor your eating habits and create an eating plan which will help you maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI). With a focus on changing negative attitudes of yourself and false perceptions of your body image, you can begin to love yourself and your body in a whole new way bringing forth feelings of hope, motivation and ultimately success.
